Cellulite causes a lot of frustration and worry for many women each year. Nearly 9 out of every 10 women have cellulite or will get it at some point during their lives. So, what are some common causes of cellulite and why are women the only ones who have it?
Not Necessarily For Women Only
Actually, men can have cellulite too but it’s not nearly as common. The connection between cellulite formation and women is believed to be a result of the hormone estrogen. While there’s not really a clear-cut answer, experts believe the early stages of cellulite begin during adolescence when estrogen begins to cause extra fat to form in the female body.
As these fat cells become enlarged, they tend to show up especially in the hip and thigh area. Over time, lymph fluid that normally passes through these tissues begins to accumulate, causing fat cells to compress and later harden into a lumpy bumpy mess. Of course, we recognize this as cellulite.. All of those things that are fun can come back to haunt you in the form of cellulite. Things like alcohol, smoking, not exercising, eating too many sugars and fats, including processed foods in the diet and more all play a role in cellulite development.
Other Probable Cellulite Causes Include A Number Of Lifestyle Factors
You can control lifestyle habits for the most part. However, another cause of cellulite is one you have little control over – aging. As we age, the tone and thickness of our skin decreases. This gradual breakdown of the skin’s connective tissues causes cellulite to appear sooner on someone who’s older.
Some believe that women develop cellulite more often than men because of differences in their skin’s composition. The fibrous tissue of a man’s skin forms a net shape while a woman’s fibrous tissues are formed in the shape of the letter X repeated over and over. In addition, this tissue in women is believed to be woven tighter than that of men. Based on the difference in shape as well as this initial tightness, women experience a worse dimpling effect on their skin than men.
Of course the causes of cellulite discussed here are theories because no one is exactly sure about what the specific cellulite causes are. However, the factors discussed tend to be present in those suffering the most from cellulite. One of the most obvious ways to fight cellulite is to lose weight if you need to, eat healthy foods, exercise regularly and keep your habits as healthy as possible.
